A Bristlebot is a small robot made by combining a toothbrush head and a vibrating pager motor. The vibrations from the pager motor travel down the bristles and cause the entire thing to scoot along flat surfaces. It's the same scientific reasons why your cell phone moves across the table when in "vibrate" mode.
This is a great activity for kids as young as ten year old. I've tested it on a classroom of 4th graders and they loved it. The build time is about five minutes for adults, 10-15 for kids.
